What to expect in a job interview - 2023

The ‘traditional’ job interview has come a long way.

Especially in ecommerce.

And while this may seem obvious given ecommerce roles rose significantly at a time when everything had to be done virtually, interview trends in ecommerce are still shifting. They continue to adapt to the market and (in our opinion) be at the forefront of what interviews of the future will look like.

2022 Interview Trends

Let’s start with the obvious. Technological advancements. Phone interviews and screenings have been a given for a while, LinkedIn flipped the recruitment industry on it’s head from 2003 and we experienced the unavoidable rise in virtual interviews in 2020 (I know I know, let’s stop talking about COVID). And while the tools we use have shifted, for a long time the traditional ‘question and answer’ approach stayed the same.

“Interviews got a lot less formal last year, clients spent a lot more time thinking about cultural and team fit than just career experience. Those who knew how in-demand ecommerce talent was, would make a point to sell themselves to the candidate too,” Elizabeth from the esuite recruitment team tells us. “We also saw a rise in ‘two-way’ interviewing, candidates had their own questions prepared, and with so many opportunities out there they made sure to ask all the right questions of their potential employer”.

Liz also made the point that “gone are the lengthy interview processes, recruitment started to move quickly, really quickly. And more often than ever before candidates had multiple job offers presented to them”.

2023 Interview Predictions

This year we’re expecting employers to focus more on fit, values and alignment than just skills and experience. And same goes for candidates. We’ll start to see face-to-face ‘interviews’ make a comeback. And the format will likely shift from traditional ‘question and answer’ style interviews, to casual catch ups over coffee, the opportunity to meet the team in person, and more oversight on business objectives and strategies.

What to expect in an interview with an esuite recruitment specialist

You’ve probably noticed by now that at esuite, we’re pretty casual. We value honest communication over ticking boxes and creating an environment where all candidates feel valued and heard.

The purpose of an interview with esuite is so that our recruitment team can get to know you, learn about your career and lifestyle goals, and ultimately make sure you’d love the job you’ve applied for.

According to Liz, “An interview with me is probably far more casual than what you’d expect. We work all over Australia so interviews are almost always done over a video call, and after we’ve already connected on the phone or over email.

I’ll take the time to get to know you as a person and an ecommerce professional. Ask about your achievements and skills, your career and financial goals, how you like to work and what you’d like to avoid in the next role. Ultimately, I want to learn what will be right for you. I like to know all about your career, and hear the whole truth, warts and all!”
