Got skills? Of course you do… If you’re anything like me, your LinkedIn profile is something you only update on the odd occasion. Once a year if you’re lucky. But here’s the thing, keeping your LinkedIn skills up-to-date can boost your chances of getting hired and finding the next job you want (think of it like platform-specific SEO).

You’re constantly learning new things on the tools right? Let’s take a look at why keeping your skills updated on LinkedIn matters—and what to do about it if it’s not already one of your most important tasks as an eCommerce employee or job seeker. Here’s three reasons why you should keep LinkedIn in the know…

1. A solid profile showcases your abilities in a way that a resume cannot.

Your LinkedIn profile is a place to showcase your skills, abilities and expertise in a way that a resume can’t. A well-crafted profile can demonstrate your expertise in a specific field, show off awards and accolades you’ve won and list any special projects or responsibilities you’ve had at work.

Let’s remember, LinkedIn is a social media site… therefore there’s plenty of people coming across your profile on the reg. This platform is your public resume that spreads your digital footprint like wildfire. The visibility is insanity. Hence, why it is important to replenish your profile often.

This makes it easier for recruiters to identify top candidates—and more likely that they’ll pick up the phone when calling you back for an interview.

2. It can help you find your next job.

If you’re looking for a job, having your skills and achievements listed on LinkedIn is a good way to showcase your work history. It’s also a great way to make sure that potential employers find you when they search for candidates online. If you’re in the middle of an interview and need some ideas about what to say next, checking out your LinkedIn profile can always help to spark inspiration.

3. It helps people find you faster

Like I said… SEO! This is a huge time saver because it makes it easier for people to find you. If someone is looking for people with your skills, they can find you more easily. This is great news if you’re looking for a job or wanting to connect with recruiters and headhunters who could bring you future opportunities.

An online presence is also important because it helps you stay connected with people who may be in your network. A LinkedIn profile can help keep you up-to-date on what’s happening in the world of recruiting and human resources—and it can give you a place to share articles that are relevant to your field. Plus, many recruiters will use the Spotlight functions on LinkedIn to see if you’re actively open to new roles too. By maintaining an updated list of skills, and utilising the ‘Open To Work’ functionality, you’ll be putting yourself forward in the best possible way for any potential role.

LinkedIn is a valuable tool. Hence the importance of ensuring your profile is up to date and reflects the most current information you have. It’s also a great way to connect with professionals in your industry who may be able to help you find work or freelance opportunities. By keeping your profile updated, you will find it easier to share your expertise with others and build relationships with other professionals in your field. The world is literally your oyster, and LinkedIn is the pearlescent sphere in the middle of it all.
