4 Ways to Strategize your ecommerce Job Hunt

Sometimes seeking a new opportunity can pan out to be a full-time job. It doesn’t always come easy and involves a lot of self-branding and marketing to be noticed by potential employers and recruiters.

Do you have a strategy in play when it comes to finding your next eCom gig?

Here’s four strategic ways to create more outlets to brand yourself and secure the role of your dreams…

  1. Networking. I’m sure you could already list a few contacts in your industry that you have crossed paths with, but if you’re starting from ground zero, here’s how you can get started.

Networking isn’t all about industry drinks, conferences and workshops – although, these will be discussed in my following tips. But there is actually a platform where you can network from home… in your PJ’s if you wish! I think you already know where I’m going with this. Yep, LinkedIn.

Sometimes we can take this platform for granted, and brush it off as another social media platform. I’m constantly prompting my friends from all industries to sign up and create a profile. It is quite literally the platform for all industries, and is a great way to not only connect with others, but learn insights, trends and research about your industry.

Get a profile, if you haven’t got one already, upload a pic, create a bio and SEO the sh*t out of it with keywords relevant to your industry and the job you want to find. Don’t be stingy with who you choose to connect with, this isn’t like Facebook. You never know which one of those connections could turn into a lead. Be active and comment, message and post often. Every time you do this, it will pop up onto your connections’ feeds. Watch your eCommerce network expand by the minute. Don’t want to come across as a LinkedIn w@^&#%, check out our previous tips on Creating a LinkedIn Presence Without Being a W@^&#%.

  1. Industry Events. Click your search tool of choice and Google ‘eCommerce events near me’. Or be more specific and search marketing, graphic design, IT, etc. Do it… Right now!

Look out for workshops, meetups, conferences, awards or drinks. Invest a little money (or pick out the freebies) and some time to create valuable connections in your industry. A great way to get your name out there and prompt people to add you on LinkedIn.

Here’s a list of some of our fave industry events…

  • The Digital Social
  • RetailFest
  • Online Retailer Expo
  • ORIAS (Online Retail Industry Awards)
  • Breakfast with Orange Digital
  • iMedia Summit
  • Shopify Meetups
  • Yotpo & Amazing Women in eCommerce events
  1. Recruiters, talent agents and career consultants. Find a recruiter you trust and build a relationship with them. Having a recruiter in your corner to help you map out your career trajectory and be on the lookout for incredible opportunities is invaluable. Plus, they are most likely in the know of roles that haven’t even hit the market yet – or maybe will never!

Want to stand out to a recruiter? Send them a personal message on LinkedIn or Emails or give them a call! If you really want to stand out from the crowd, check out these tips here.

We have some pretty amazing recruiters amongst our team, and they are always up for a chat with incredible people. Hit us up when you’re ready for a chat at contact@esuitetalent.com.au.

  1. Preparation. Before you start applying, begin preparing your CV, portfolio, cover letter and achievements. These are just the basics! If you want to go to more depth, start to get the full-picture of where you want to be in the next 5 years and how you’re going to get there.

These are some of the most important steps in securing your next eCommerce career milestone. And if you keep up with these strategies, it will set you up for hiring success for all future job changes.
